Mapping Artemis, Exploring Demeter
The Artemis Dispatch - A Quarterly Newsletter
Hello everyone!
This is a little different from my usual posts here on Substack, but I thought I’d try something new. Many of you are subscribed to the monthly newsletter through the Artemis Centre, where I share updates on research, courses, fieldwork, and everything else that’s happening behind the scenes. But I realized that some of you here on Substack probably don’t see those updates, and I don’t want you to miss out.
So I’m thinking of sharing a newsletter like this here once every few months. Let me know what you think. I’d love to hear if this is something you’d enjoy seeing from time to time.
July has turned into one of the busiest and most exciting months we’ve had at the Artemis Centre. Although I’ve been landlocked in Canada this summer, I’m beginning to think that’s exactly where I was meant to be. Between new research projects, writing, teaching, and planning what’s ahead, there’s been an incredible amount happening behind the scenes.
One of the biggest milestones is that the audiobook edition of She Who Hunts is finally here, and I’m so excited to be able to share it with you. I’m also working with two research assistants through the University of Guelph to develop an ArcGIS digital map for the Artemis Mapping Project. It’s an exciting step into the world of digital humanities, and I hope it helps bring even more academic attention to this growing research project.
I’m also putting the finishing touches on our brand new fall course, The Artemis Triad, which I’ve wanted to teach for a very long time. This month we’re continuing our Year of the Goddess series with Demeter, including a virtual visit to Eleusis, new site footage, artifacts, and a discussion of Demeter’s role within the mysteries.
All of our previous Year of the Goddess workshops are now available on replay, and we’re also wrapping up our live Writing the Goddess series over the next two weeks.
I also wanted to mention one of my favourite parts of the Artemis Centre, our free Goddess Wisdom community. If you haven’t joined us yet, I’d love to invite you. It’s a wonderful group of people who are curious about ancient goddesses, archaeology, mythology, and history, and it’s become a really welcoming space for discussion and learning.
Throughout the year I offer free quarterly Goddess Wisdom workshops, and even if you can’t attend live, you don’t have to miss out. Inside the group you’ll find a Workshop Recordings section where you can watch all of the previous workshops at your own pace, completely free.
If you’d like to join us, you’ll find the link below. I hope to see you there!
Looking ahead, I’ll be travelling to Crete in August to explore several sites connected to Artemis alongside friends and colleagues there, and I can’t wait to bring you along on that journey.
A number of you have also asked about a casual virtual coffee chat, and I love the idea. I’m hoping to organize one toward the end of July, or in August if schedules work better. Nothing formal, just an opportunity to grab a coffee or lunch and spend some time talking about goddesses, archaeology, research, and whatever else comes up.
Now, on to this month’s highlights!

Thank you, as always, for being part of the Artemis Centre community.
There are so many exciting things taking shape right now. Some projects are already underway, some are still quietly evolving, and a few are ideas I’ve been sitting with for a long time that are finally beginning to find their form. I can’t wait to share more with you over the coming months.
Until then, thank you for reading, for learning alongside me, and for supporting this growing community. Every class, conversation, and shared discovery helps keep this work moving forward.
I hope you have a wonderful July, and I’ll see you soon.
With gratitude,
Dr. Carla Ionescu
